July 6th. The plan for today was to ride from Hill City, Sd to Cody, Wy. We had a great day.
On one 42 mile stretch from Newcastle, wy to I-90, Zach and I played a game. We tried to guess how many vehicles we would see on this lonely highway. You can see for miles ahead out here, and other vehicles were few and far between. The final count was 62.
The terrain went from flat, to hilly with the temp in the 90's, to the Big Horn Mountain pass where the was snow beside the road, and a little chilly, then it was right back down to flat with rolling hills.
After we crossed the Big Horn's, we passed through a canyon on the way to Ten Sleep, Wy. It was 24 miles to the next town, Worland. about halfway there, we could see a storm in the distance. THe sky was black, and we could tell that it was dropping smoe heavy rain. Then we started to see lots of lightning. Zach asked me,"Isn't a little dangerous for us to be out here with all that lightning coming our way?" Just before we made it to Worland, the temperature dropped, and the wind(which was already strong) started to blow harder. As we rolled into town, the wind was so string that it was blowing us around. We saw a Mc Donalds, so we pulled in, to get off the bike and try and ride out the storm. The were about 15 senior citizens sittng around talking and drinking coffee. One of the struck up a conversation wit me when we came in. When I told her where we werw headed, she sain, "Oh, it's bad over toward Cody, the TV man just said the winds are blowing hard, and hail is falling." That was enough for us to hear, so we decided to stay here in Worland for tonight. THe forecast is for good weather tomorrow, so Yellowstone here we come.
If it works I have attatched a short video Zach shot of the sky in Worland.
I am glad you stopped! Stay safe and dry. Love ya Aunt Doris
